Yay! I’m so excited to share these modern snowflake DIY Christmas ornaments with you.

This year I joined a handmade ornament exchange with a group of bloggers. My partner is Jessa from Sparkle Living, who is decorating in a modern palette of black, white, and metallics. I wanted to make ornaments that would complement her tree, so I designed these modern snowflake DIY Christmas ornaments. If you like clean, contemporary holiday decor, this project is for you.

Below is a clear materials list and step-by-step process so you can recreate these modern snowflake ornaments for your own tree or to give as handmade gifts.
Modern Snowflake DIY Christmas Ornaments Materials List
- Cricut Maker
- Modern Snowflake cut file (Design Space)
- Knife blade
- 2 mm chipboard (11″ x 11″)
- StrongGrip mat
- Painter’s tape
- StandardGrip mat
- Black adhesive vinyl
- Weeder tool
- White acrylic paint
- Sponge-tip applicator
- Hole punch
- Glue (clear-drying craft glue)
- Half pearl flat-back beads
- Ornament hanger
Start by opening the snowflake project in Design Space. Select “Heavy Chipboard” from the material dropdown and install the knife blade into clamp B of your Cricut Maker. Place your 11″ x 11″ chipboard on the StrongGrip mat, centering it so it doesn’t press directly against the mat borders. Even though the StrongGrip mat adheres well, the knife blade requires extra security: tape all four edges of the chipboard down with painter’s tape before loading the mat into the machine.

The knife blade cuts slowly and precisely, so be prepared for a longer cut time. It’s normal to see a lengthy remaining-time estimate while the Maker works. Once the chipboard is fully cut, though, the rest of the assembly moves quickly.

After cutting, remove the snowflake shapes carefully from the mat. I painted both the front and back of my ornaments with white acrylic paint for a clean, modern look, but you can choose any color or finish. Use a sponge-tip applicator for even coverage. The paint dries fairly quickly between thin coats.

Next, cut and weed the snowflake vinyl from black adhesive vinyl. The vinyl snowflake is a simple design and adheres well directly to the chipboard without transfer tape in most cases. Press it firmly onto the painted surface so the edges lay flat and the negative spaces read cleanly.

Use a hole punch to create a small hanging hole at the top of the ornament. Make sure the hole is centered so the ornament hangs straight on the tree.

For a touch of elegance, add embellishments: place a flat-back pearl bead in the center of the snowflake and glue half-pearl beads at each tip. Use a small amount of clear craft glue so the beads sit flush and hold securely. Allow glue to dry fully before handling.

Finally, attach a pretty ornament hanger through the punched hole, and your modern snowflake ornament is ready to hang.

Although making the chipboard cuts takes the most time, assembly is simple and satisfying. These ornaments look great in groups or mixed with other modern decorations. I plan to make several more in different color combinations for my tree.
